Susan Pace Hamill Announces Candidacy for State House District 63
Posted July 1, 2009
Tuscaloosa, AL - Appearing before a crowd of supporters at Trinity United Methodist Church, attorney Susan Pace Hamill announced today her candidacy for state House District 63. "Today, I am officially announcing that I am rolling up my sleeves," said Hamill, who is seeking the Democratic nomination.
A graduate of the Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, Hamill has focused her career on advocating for fairer tax policies rooted in faith-based moral principles, stating, " I believe the process through which government makes all policy should be premised on central moral and ethical standards."
A first-time candidate, Hamill is not new to Alabama politics. Since 2002, she has been invited to speak at churches and advocacy groups across the state of Alabama. Her research has also influenced politicians on the right and the left, with Governor Riley endorsing her work during a television appearance in October of 2002.
Hamill began her legal career practicing corporate tax law. In the eighties and nineties, she become one of the first experts on limited liability companies, helping to establish a new class of business that extends many of the protections enjoyed by larger companies to small businesses. In 1994, she began teaching law at the University of Alabama, and she currently sits on the board of directors for the University of Alabama Wesley Foundation, the Alabama Poverty Project, and Turning Point, an organization devoted to assisting victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Hamill has been married to her husband, Brad Roane, for 27 years. They have two children, William and Nancy Lee, and attend Trinity United Methodist Church.
